Google Maps is the world's most used mobile app

Google Maps is the world's most used mobile app

Google Maps is the most frequently used mobile app, according to a study by GlobalWebIndex, as it has been used by 54% of the global smartphone population within the past month. Google’s competitors in Nokia’s Ovi Maps and Apple Maps didn’t fare quite as well with Nokia coming in 11th in the chart with 9% usage while Apple Maps was nowhere to be seen.

The study identified the top 10 apps being used by the 969.49m global smartphone users, based on the % of users who have taken advantage of the services they offer in the last month.

Facebook’s mobile app came in 2nd, used by 44% of smartphone users while YouTube claimed 3rd with 35%. While many dismiss Google+ as a social network, the app was used by 30% of global smartphone users in the past month. Meanwhile, the Chinese-based Weixin / WeChat made it into the charts at number 5, an impressive feat as the service is basically used only in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Rounding out the top 10 are Twitter Mobile App (22%), Skype (22%), Facebook Messenger (22%), Whatsapp (17%) and Instagram (11%).
