Apple to start trade-in program for third-party mobile power adapters

Apple on Monday said it would begin a new trade-in program to offer customers who owned iPhone, iPad and iPod power adapters not made by Apple a chance to get an authorized one for $10. That’s half what Apple would normally charge.

Anyone can turn in an old third-party USB power adapter to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Retailer and get a new Apple-made model for $10, or the local equivalent. In the U.S. the take-back program begins Aug. 16. In China, where a woman was reportedly electrocuted using an iPhone adapter not sold by Apple, the program begins Aug. 9.
